Monday, March 28, 2005
Plattsburgh, New York___The Board of Trustees of Clinton Community College announced their decision today to forward the name of Maurice B. Hickey, Ph.D., as the new President of Clinton Community College. A meeting with Chancellor Robert L. King and his staff is scheduled for March 29, 2005. Dr. Hickey’s appointment as president of the College is expected to be made at the April 12th meeting of the SUNY Board of Trustees.
“Dr. Hickey brings many years of community college experience with him,” said Nina Coolidge, chairperson of the search committee. “He has had years of teaching, and worked his way through the administrative ranks to become a Vice President of Academic Services. He is very involved in his community and understands the strong relationship that needs to exist between the community and the college.
Mrs. Coolidge further explained, “The college family and community were very much a part of the decision made today."
Since 2000, Dr. Hickey has served as Vice President for Academic Services at Chesapeake College, in Wye Mills, Maryland. In this capacity he was directly responsible for providing leadership and supervision for all academic, instructional, and learning programs and personnel. He implemented the instructional aspects of the strategic plan for all academic programs and associated facilities, equipment, personnel and budgets. This included the promotion of teaching and learning, the use of technology to enhance learning, building consensus in support of the College’s mission, actively representing the College in the community and at the State and National level. As a senior administrator he worked with the President, the Board of Trustees, other administrators and college faculty and staff to achieve the College’s vision of providing a learning-centered environment to maximize the students’ potential for intellectual and personal growth. Prior to his position as Vice President for Academic Services, he also served as Associate Dean for Allied Health from 1997 to 2000, Department Chair Allied Health from 1992 to 1997, and Director of Athletics, from 1982 to 1988 at Chesapeake College. From 1970 to 1973 he was a neuropsychiatric specialist, Spec 5 in the U. S. Army at Valley Forge Army Hospital and spent several years at Chesapeake College as a member of the faculty following his military service. Dr. Hickey has chaired or served on a number of community boards and professional associations and he is the recipient of numerous awards, including Teaching Excellence Award, from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in 1993.
Hickey received his Doctor of Philosophy from University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland in administration and biomechanics. He earned his Master of Science Degree at West Chester State College, Pennsylvania in health and physical education. Dr. Hickey earned his Bachelor of Science in physical education from Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York and his high school diploma from Ausable Forks High School, Ausable, New York.
Upon his appointment by the SUNY Board of Trustees, Dr. Hickey will assume the duties of the presidency of Clinton Community College on July 1, 2005. He will replace Interim President Agnes Pearl, who the Board of Trustees chose to lead the College until the search for a new president was completed. Dr. Pearl replaced Dr. Carol Eaton who left the College in September of 2004 to accept the position of Vice Chancellor of Community Colleges for SUNY.
