Exploring Educational Issues Through Writing Bibliographic Instruction


(ENG 237)

I. ACCESSING THE DIGITAL LIBRARY FROM HOME 
    A. Go to http://www.clinton.edu 
    B. From the menu on the left, click “Douglas Library.” 
    C. Click “Library Catalog” or click “Online Periodicals (Databases)” and choose a database. 
    D. For databases, you will be prompted for your username and password. Your username is the first 4 letters of your last name & the last 4 digits of your SS#. Enter the same password you use to access computers on campus.

II. FINDING BOOKS 
    A. Library Catalog 
    B. Browse the shelves for books with call numbers starting with the letter “L” 
    C. On Campus: Reavis Reading Area: Phi Delta Kappa Fastbacks & Paperbacks 
    * The Reavis Reading Area consists of paperbacks and fastbacks on education published by the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation. 
    * Shelved near the periodicals, these materials are available for circulation. 
    * Use the library catalog to look up subjects as well as authors and titles. 
    * To see a list of the fastbacks, do a search for the series “fastback” in the Douglas Library Catalog. 
    * Fastbacks are also available online (see below). 
    D. Online: Phi Delta Kappa Fastbacks 
    Available from 01/01/1998 to 07/01/2005 in the Wilson OmniFile: Full Text Select database. Within this database, the fastbacks can be found by doing a search for Phi Delta Kappa Fastbacks as the “Source.” Also available from 01/01/2004 to 01/01/2005 in the Research Library (Proquest) database. Within this database, the fastbak ca be found by doing a search for Phi Delta Kappa Fastbacks as the "Publication Title."

III. DATABASES SPECIFIC TO EDUCATION 
    A. ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) (EBSCO)
        1. Type your search terms. 
        2. Click in box to limit to “Full Text.” 
        3. To limit to journal articles, under “Journal or Document,” choose “Journal Articles.” (To find full-text ERIC publications, go to "Advanced Search" and under "Publication Type," choose "ERIC Publications."
        4. Click “Search.” 
        5. Consider a search of the thesaurus before you enter search terms.

    B. Education Research Complete (EBSCO)
        1. Type your search terms. 
        2. Click in box to limit to “Full Text.” 
        3. Click in box to limit to “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.” 
        4. Click “Search.” 
        5. Consider a search of the thesaurus before you enter search terms.

    C. Professional Development Collection (EBSCO)
        1. Type your search terms. 
        2. Click in box to limit to “Full Text.” 
        3. Click in box to limit to “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.” 
        4. Click “Search.” 

IV. GENERAL DATABASES FOR FINDING FULL TEXT JOURNAL ARTICLES
    A. Research Library (ProQuest) 
        1. Click “Clear all databases.” 
        2. Scroll down, and click “Research Library.” 
        3. Type your search terms. 
        4. Click in box to limit to “Full text articles only.” 
        5. Click in box for “Scholarly journals.” 
        6. Click “Search.” 

    B. Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select 
        1. Type your search terms. 
        2. Click in box to limit to “Full Text Articles.” 
        3. Click in box to limit to “Peer Reviewed.” 
        4. Click “Start.”

V. DETERMINING IF ANY OF THE LIBRARY’S DATABASES PROVIDE A SPECIFIC JOURNAL IN FULL TEXT
    A. Go to the Douglas Library homepage
    B. On the Databases page, click "Online Periodicals by Title."  
    C. Type in journal title, and click “Search.”

VI. TO SEE A LIST OF ALL THE EDUCATION JOURNALS AVAILABLE IN FULL TEXT THROUGH THE LIBRARY’S DATABASES
    A. Go to Douglas Library homepage
    B. On the Databases page, click "Online Periodicals by Title." 
    C. Under “Browse e-journals by subject,” select “Social Sciences.” 
    D. Click “Search.” 
    E. Scroll down, and select an education subject. 

VII. RECOMMENDED EDUCATION WEBSITES 
        1. Go to the Douglas Library homepage
        2. Under "Find Selected Websites," click "Sites by Subject."
        3. Click “Education.”
